Privacy Policy

UB - Aware (also referred to as “UB Aware,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) delivers timely information based on your current location. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through our mobile application, website, and related services (the “Services”), why we use it, and the choices available to you.

By using the Services, you acknowledge the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

• Account information: your email address, name, password credentials processed by our authentication provider, user identifier, and account status. You may also be able to use the app through an anonymous account.
• Profile information: information you choose to add, such as a profile photo.
• Communications: the contents of messages you send us, including support or business inquiries.

Information collected when you use the Services

• Precise location: with your permission, the app accesses your device’s precise or approximate location while location features are active. We store the latest latitude, longitude, accuracy, and update time associated with your account so we can determine which alerts, places, events, news, weather, and other information are relevant nearby.
• Notification information: notification permission status, an app push token, notification delivery data, and information about how you respond to a notification.
• Preferences and local activity: selected categories, distance radius, map and traffic settings, onboarding status, and limited visit or notification history. Some of this information is stored only on your device.
• Device and technical information: our service providers may automatically process device type, operating system, app version, IP address, request timestamps, diagnostic logs, and similar security or performance information.

We do not intentionally collect your device contacts, microphone recordings, or financial account credentials through the consumer app.

2. How location information works

Location is central to UB - Aware. When you grant permission and use location-enabled parts of the app, your device supplies location readings. The current app uses foreground location tracking and periodically updates the latest location stored in our backend while tracking is active. We use that location to compare your position with the geographic area attached to a message or nearby resource.

You can stop location access through your device settings. If you do, location-based features may be unavailable or less accurate. If a future version requests background location, we will provide a clear in-app disclosure and request the required permission before collecting it.

3. How we use information

We use personal information to:

• provide, personalize, and maintain the Services;
• identify nearby messages, events, places, weather, traffic, news, and safety information;
• send notifications you have permitted and process your interaction with them;
• create and secure accounts, remember settings, and support profile features;
• respond to questions, support requests, and business inquiries;
• detect misuse, troubleshoot problems, and protect users, our partners, and the Services;
• understand and improve performance and develop new features; and
• comply with law and enforce our agreements.

Where required, we rely on your consent, performance of our agreement with you, our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Services, and compliance with legal obligations.

4. How we disclose information

We may disclose information to:

• Infrastructure providers, including Supabase for authentication, database, storage, and backend services.
• Notification and platform providers, including Expo and the notification services operated by Apple and Google.
• Map, location, content, and data providers that help deliver maps, geocoding, weather, traffic, news, events, or other nearby information.
• Professional advisers and authorities when reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect rights and safety, investigate misuse, or establish and defend legal claims.
• A successor or transaction participant in connection with a financing, merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate protections.

Participating businesses create location-based messages, but we do not provide them with unrestricted access to your precise location. We do not sell personal information for money. We also do not use personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising unless we first provide any notice and choice required by applicable law.

5. Data retention

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described above, including to provide the Services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and protect against abuse. The app’s backend is designed to keep the latest submitted user location rather than a continuous server-side route history. Some preferences and visit history may remain on your device until you clear app data or uninstall the app.

Retention periods vary by the type of information and our legal or operational needs. When information is no longer needed, we delete it or de-identify it where reasonably practicable.

6. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards intended to protect personal information. No storage or transmission method is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Keep your password confidential and contact us if you believe your account has been compromised.

7. Your choices and rights

• Location: change location permissions in your iOS or Android device settings.
• Notifications: disable push notifications in device settings at any time.
• Profile: update certain account and profile information in the app where available.
• Local data: clear app storage or uninstall the app to remove information stored locally on that device.
• Privacy requests: depending on where you live, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or objection, or withdraw consent. You may also have the right to appeal a decision or complain to your local privacy authority.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. Some information may be retained where permitted or required by law.

8. Delete your account and data

You may request deletion of your UB - Aware account and associated personal information by emailing us from the address connected to your account. Use the subject line “Delete my UB Aware account” and include enough information for us to identify the account.

9. Children’s privacy

The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If local law requires a higher minimum age for consent, that higher age applies. If you believe a child has provided information without appropriate authorization, contact us so we can take appropriate action.

10. International users

We and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries, which may have different data-protection rules from your country. Where required, we use lawful safeguards for international transfers.

11. Third-party services

The Services may link to third-party websites, offers, stores, maps, or content. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one. We encourage you to review them before providing information.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the Services evolve. We will post the updated policy and revise the date above. If a change materially affects your rights, we will provide additional notice when required by law.
